After months of getting hundreds, if not thousands, of petition signatures, you don’t want your hard work going to waste by not making the ballot because your packet isn’t filed properly.
With the filing period opening next week on November 27th, Collin Corbett and Cor’s Operations Marshal Ryan Kilduff talk through the ins and outs of correctly preparing your petition packets to file—because (shocker!) Illinois doesn’t make the process easy.
The official test if your packet is bound properly is if it stays together when thrown against the wall, but you’re not allowed to use permanent fasteners like staples. You must sequentially number the pages, but that numbering doesn’t start until the petition pages and restarts if you have deletion pages. You must file the receipt for your Statement of Economic Interests, not the statement itself. Oh, and the name on your Statement of Candidacy must exactly match the name on your petitions, even if that name doesn’t exactly match the name you registered under, and your signature should still be your official signature, even if that name is different than the name you’re running under…
Like we said, it’s not an easy process. Intentionally so, thanks to Illinois’ arcane election laws. Collin and Ryan have helped get over 700 candidates on the ballot without a single one being knocked off. Watch what they have to say:
